ISLA DE COIBA

El Parque Nacional Coiba está situado en el Pacífico, al Sur de la Provincia de Veraguas, y con una extensión de 270,125 hectáreas protege ecosistemas marinos, insulares y costeros. Dentro de este Parque se encuentran las áreas insulares de Isla Coiba, Ranchería (Coibita), Jicarón, Jicarita, Afuerita, Canal de Afuera, Uvas, Contreras y Brincanco (153,582 hectáreas), así como las áreas marinas (216,543 hectáreas), que lo convierten en unos de los parques marinos más extensos del mundo y su plataforma continental.

Coiba, con 49,300 hectáreas, es la isla más grande del Pacífico Americano, por su aislamiento geográfico se establece en ella en 1910 una colonia penal, la que hoy todavía existe, situación que ha favorecido a mantener los bosques de esta isla en estado inalterado.
